I have a 2nd floor gym and the flooring in this room is ceramic tile. I was comfortable going with the 8mm because I'm not a weight dropper and I wanted to keep the dead load minimal on the floor. I've had some accidental drops and so far I've no issues with damaging my tile below.

The 8mm rubber rolls from Flooring Inc. have been a great choice for my gym. I wanted something with a nicer finish than horse stall mats, and this has been exactly that while still being pretty economical when on sale. It cleans easily, has good traction, and works well over concrete. For now I just have the seams taped down, but I may eventually glue them to prevent a few small edge spots from lifting. There are also plenty of color flake options, which makes it easy to personalize the look for your space.
