Weider Vintage Weight Plates

Weider Vintage Weight Plates

Joe Weider, a leading bodybuilding promoter who helped launch Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career, once approached Andy Jackson to collaborate on a weight set. In the 1950s, Jackson’s small operation was producing the best weight sets in America. The story goes that Jackson helped Weider, but Weider reneged on the deal and stole the design. The set, briefly advertised in 1954, features an incredible crosshub design, with every plate marked down to 2.5 lbs. It’s now known that these sets were also produced later in Canada for a limited time.

I have the old school yellow 50s and the blue 45s and they are trusty and sturdy, do the trick and help make up the difference on Axle bar

These Weider 20kg plates arn’t anything special, just the first plates I ever trained with. Basic, solid, and they got the job done. Nothing fancy, but they built the foundation.

Weider International 45 lb plates are widely considered "entry-level" vintage iron. they lack the precision of high-end competition brands

These are very cool plates. Hubs are nice and fairly tight, outer lip is really nice, but the outer diameter is slightly smaller than other plates. I will eventually do a proper restoration on these.

I’m not a vintage weight guy at all, but these are in my gym and have been since it was built. They predate my gym to be honest. These are 1 inch plates and could probably use a good cleaning. But they’re pretty. They are also not the cross hub design. Which is weird but what do I know?

As vintage crosshub plates go, these are both desirable and accessible. Sets routinely change hands, though it can still run you upwards of $2k for a nice pair of 45s with original paint, a bit less if repainted or in need of restoration. They are very popular for hub lifting. this set is also one of the only ones that has cross hubs all the way down to the 10 pound change plates, and consistent Weider International labeling all the way down to the 2 1/2 pound plates. The story behind them is a core part of vintage iron history, so these will always be sought after and therefore will hold their value well, making it a bit easier to swallow the purchase price pill.

A legendary set. My first crosshubs. The rare greens all the way down to the 2.5s. Just something that lights my face up with joy everytime I walk into the gym. Looks great on the wall or on a bar.
