About the Gym
My garage gym started in 2012 with a basic starter barbell kit from Sports Authority (RIP) - about 250 lb of iron plates, cheap chrome barbell with hex bolted sleeves, and a pair of spring collars - and an old Marcy adjustable bench that was donated to me from a friend. I was a former runner whose love of running was replaced over time with the love of the iron. For the first five years or so, my garage gym set up was minimalist: a power rack, Texas power bar (the chrome Sports Authority bar bent when my deadlift reached mid-300s), adjustable bench, about 500 lbs of iron plates, and a home made lifting platform. The addition of equipment started slowly, but it built up over time, until I arrived at the monstrosity that I have today. The proverbial flood gate opened, so to speak, around mid-2021, when people began to sell off their "Covid-era gym" on FB marketplace or Craigslist. Through assiduous and strategic use of such platforms, I was able to acquire many equipment at extreme bargain prices. I've also acquired some major pieces for FREE, e.g. my Polaris leg press, Parabody lat pulldown and low row, Body Masters 45 degree hyperextension, and Concept2 model B rower. At this point, I'm not seeking to add anything more. I'm trying more and more to appreciate what I have - which is easier said than done! I thank God for the gift (cf. 1 Cor 4:7) that is my gym.
