When the Bowflex SelectTech 552 first dropped, they were legitimately good. Dial-adjustable weight in a compact footprint felt like the future of home gyms. For a lot of us, this was the gateway piece of equipment that made progressive overload possible in a spare room or garage. They absolutely helped launch my home gym journey. I still use mine today.
That said, time has not stood still. Adjustable dumbbell tech has made major leaps since then. The 552s now feel bulky, the handle diameter is awkward, and the lack of proper knurling is a miss and they went with a soft rubber grip when they should have gone with metal. There are better, more compact, more durable options on the market now. But credit where it’s due: these were pioneers. For many home gym lifters, this was the spark.
