Once this arrived one thing was immediately apparent, it is huge! It’s as though REP channeled Rogue’s overbuilt philosophy. So huge that depending, storage may be tight based on your space. That size also comes with height so if you aren’t a taller lifter, you may want step platforms or blocks to clear this thing. I’d say you’ll be better off 6’ or more.
The pads for the quads/hams are a mixed bag. For leg extension I find the pads okay except for the grippy vinyl. That vinyl grabs any pants as you get into position so you may find you’re fighting your pants twisting on you. As far as leg curls go, I see the criticism from some YouTube reviewers as far as comfort. They do put a bit of pressure on your quads and I believe the main reason is the thickness and angle of those pads on the Nighthawk. They are higher and at a different (more level) angle. So I believe that is what creates that jab into the quads. REP needs to redesign them with a more rounded and correctly angled pad. If they have to work around a one size fits all for the 3 benches then I say offer the correctly designed pads to go with the custom connector you get.
But how does it actually work? I’d say pretty flippin good. I have a cable stack to connect to and the resistance curve is fantastic. Extremely smooth and very consistent. Wanting to give a decent opinion on plate loaded I tossed on some plates and added some Elite FTS light bands to even out the curve. The design did not disappoint. I was extremely impressed with the curve with weights and the bands. I’d say your muscle development won’t notice nor care if you don’t have a cable option… and it’ll save you some $70.
I will dispute some gripes about connecting it as the best way to connect is simple. Stage the LD, raise the bench high, then slide bench into position. Drop back pad into position, pop pop, and done.
I do think it’s great but far from perfect. It is very stable to boot, but it needs to go on a diet for sure.
