Keg - Custom/DIY
The strongman keg is a classic odd object built for real-world strength. Made from heavy-duty steel and designed to be filled to precise weights, it’s used for loading, carries, and overhead events while developing grip, hip drive, and midline stability.

Bought an empty keg off of marketplace and bought a bunch of sand an a 2" rubber end cap from the plumbing section at Home Depot. Used a cut up lemonade bottle and a plastic cup to scoop damp sand for a 150lbs keg so it took a while, but 100% worth it. Great training implement to get strong.

An inexpensive, versatile piece of strongman equipment.
Filling with sand can be a long, slow process but it’s worth it. If you let your sand dry, the process is MUCH easier.
Use a rubber fernco cap, not the clean out caps with the wingnut. The wingnuts will tear up your forearms.
Mine is nearly filled with a combo of multi-use gravel and play sand and it’s 175lbs.

These were actually purchased by my training partner (shoutout Brick James) but we have decided to share custody. I love a good heavy keg, but for your own sanity try to find them pre filled. Trying to put 150 pounds of wet sand down a funnel I think should be outlawed by the geneva convention as cruel and unusual punishment. We have 2 more empty kegs to fill to 250 and 300 but the actual filling of them will have to come later due to a lack of lead. Don’t let that stop you though. I love kegs and think everyone should have at least 1 knocking around.

Kegs are often found free or worst case just to pay the deposit on a rental. Add a rubber fernco cap (usually 1-1/2”) and a couple bags of sand from Home Depot (and maybe a funnel!) and you have a great strongman implement for about as cheap as you can get.

The hardest part of having a strongman keg is finding the keg. Maybe you go to a keg party and offer them the deposit, maybe you go behind a bar on empties day. Once you have the keg, removing the valve is best done after all the pressure has been released with a flat head. Rinse it out and let it dry for a few days. An upside down 2L pop bottle makes filling it much easier. Use a 2” PVC end cap to keep everything inside.

Definitely great to have for strongman training, or just want have a enjoyable workout easy to fill to desired weights and the picture below is 65lbs that I have added and goes up to 300lbs or so as my max filled on it only thing I can say is don’t overpay for one though. It is a great addition...

Picked up 3 kegs for carries, and 3 pony kegs for throwing. Biggest issue is loading the sand. I am not a patient man. Also pea gravel makes the throwing kegs sound much cooler.

Picked one up for a liquor store for the cost of the deposit. It weighs 213 lb. when completely filled with sand. While it’s not the quickest process, it’s easy enough to adjust the weight if you are trying a new movement.

Great strongman implement you can get for free or very cheap. Just need some elbow grease and go to home Depot and buy a cap for the top of the keg.
We have 5 custom kegs up to 300lb+

My kegs have custom decals in it from plates snacks. I ordered the 35lb stickers and asked no center hole cut out.
Spray painted the back, then once sticker was applied, I clear coated it to help protect it a bit.
