It's basically a PVC pipe coated in a layer of foam. As you'd imagine, it's not quite as intense as rolling on a PVC pipe by itself (which is a. Thing people do, I guess), but it's meaningfully more intense (and effective) than an all foam roller. This strikes a nice balance between comfort and firmness, making the pain tolerable while allowing you to more easily release tension in the muscles. I've had mine now for probably close to ten years and it has held up well. Note: the attached picture was taken after my son rolled it up and down the drive way.

It's a pretty basic product, mine is black, helps remove tension with various nubs on different sides so you can choose how deep you want to go and with how much pressure. I'll use it mostly for hamstrings and lower back when I'm getting tense from a big deadlift or squat session. Or as a way to warm up when it's cold out or I'm just feeling rheumy.
It is one of the least expensive tools in the gym and I'd recommend this to just about everyone. Doesn't take up much space, and you can use points on Amazon, so really doesn't cost much at the end of the day.

I was having some issues with my back years ago and I got talked into using a foam roller. I would roll out and my back would pop and feel so good.
I then would use it to roll my quads, glutes, and hammies and that would help lower back pain.
I decided to buy one for home, I wanted something that would last and not fall apart after a few years like some foam rollers. I found this one and decided to get it. It’s firm enough due to the tube core wrapped with foam. Yet soft enough that it doesn’t feel like you’re rolling on just a hard tube.
Over all I’m happy with it and would recommend it, but I understand its personal preference.

Nothing fancy but works. Like rolling out with my squat warm ups.

A cheap foam roller option from Amazon. Seems to be holding up to light use however numerous other reviews report quality issues.

Nice modality for self massage and loosening tight muscles.

Okay so I don’t actually believe in foam rolling but someone convinced me it would help with DOMS.
This one is pretty darn good, and has held up for years! No reason to spend a ton of money on a foam roller if I’m being honest.

My old gym had one. It got a crack down the middle on the inside of it after some time. It never fully split but made an audible loud pop every time you rolled over it. I didn't find it any more beneficial than going to Lowe's or Home Depot and buying a PVC pipe

These should be standard equipment for any home, let alone any home gym. They are great for warming up, stretching, working out those tight muscles, and come in different variations and sizes. The Trigger Point are, in my opinion, the premium roller. They're durable, the foam is nice and firm, and you'll never have to worry about one of these collapsing on you.
