Westside Scout Hyper

Westside Scout Hyper

The Scout Hyper is a patented, foldable reverse-hyper machine developed by powerlifting legend Louie Simmons and Westside Barbell. This uniquely lightweight and mobile design features hinging legs that lock into place with pop pins and easily fold back for efficient storage after use (the total depth of the unit, when folded, is just 13”). Louie Simmons created this model with home, work, and light clinical use in mind—with particular benefits for younger athletes or those new to reverse hyper training. The unit comes standard with a durable, round-edge pad (27.5” wide x 21.5” deep x 2” thick) to limit friction against the hips, as well as a nylon webbing hyper strap, two weight posts (5.25” loadable length), a set of spring collars, and 6” long handles. A bolt-on handle extension kit is also available a la carte for users who need to accommodate a shorter distance from the end of the pad to the handles.

For what it is, the scout is awesome. It folds away and does not take up much space. After you get used to set up and take down, it just takes a few seconds. However I think a lot of people buy before trying and this ends up being a table. I use it occasionally and think its a pretty good reverse hyper. The real issue is after about 150-175lbs of plates it will wobble and you need to use sandbags or something to hold it down. I use it to warm up my glutes/hams so don't put much weight on and do high reps but if you are planning to load this, just get a full size one. As far as the movement, this is no different than the full size rogue imo and I've used that one many times.

I love that it folds although I’ve found a spot to leave it setup. Great for what it is, weight can bang into your shins if you really get going, I use it to warmup for squat and deadlift. Gets my lower back activated.

I recently sold this when I was trying to downsize, and almost immediately regretted it. It’s a great piece of equipment, and if you have the wall space to store it folded, it’s worth it. The only cons were that the sleeves are pretty short and limit the number of plates you can use, and it had a tendency to rock a little side to side during heavier sets. If you have the space to store it, and have any lower back issues at all, it’s absolutely worth it. If you don’t have back issues, it’s still a really nice accessory after heavy deadlifts.

This is great to get going on the reverse hyper. You do need thinner plates or 100s to load it up, and it will move around. It worked great for me with a smaller space and being able to fold up, but now with a bigger space to work with, I will be getting a donkey or something similar. It can work to do back raises too, if you hook your feet to the handles or strap yourself in. It is finicky to do, but it does work, and you can hang onto weight arm. Works fantastic as a neck machine, if you have a neck harness. Upright rows feel pretty nice as well. It is a 10/10 machine for small spaces.

The Scout Reverse Hyper is a solid piece of equipment that allows you to perform the reverse hyper movement with lighter weight. The narrow frame design makes it tricky to load up more than two 45 lbs plates per side. I've found that using lighter weight and higher reps with a controlled negative works best for me. The fold up and storage feature is a nice idea on for home gyms. The draw back to the fold away design is that you have to be committed to the reverse hyper movement to put up with effort it takes to set it up. If the machine is tucked away in a corner that is difficult to access, the likelihood of the machine sitting in the corner collecting dust is high. I would recommend trying out a reverse hyper movement before spending the money on this piece of equipment.

Took a bit of a risk by buying one of these used before ever having done a reverse hyper. Great movement and controlling the weight throughout the exercise feels genuinely good. My biggest gripe is that it is not as easy to fold up or move around as i had hoped for, but that also says a lot about its sturdiness

This works great for a good chunk of the population; however, it is not suited for strong lifters. The weight limit is too low and if you exceed (or greatly exceed the weight limit), this thing will move around your gym floor. It folds up, takes up low space, and I could see it working out for many people; however, if reverse hyper extensions are a movement you love or need in your programming, it's better to buy one that can handle more weight.

If you have persistent or even occasional lower back pain you might want to try a reverse hyper. The scout is compact and reasonably heavy duty. If you're trying to progressively overload your reverse hypers it will probably wobble, but at lighter weights, around 2 plates per side or less, it's totally fine. It's a life saver at times for sure.

In my gym, space is as important as the equipment. I bought the Westside Reverse Hyper as a way to help rehab my back. It worked great and now is an integral part of my training. The ability fold it and put a way is critical to my day to day gym operations. It does exactly what I need it to do, and when I’m done, it folds up and stores neatly next to my functional trainer instead of permanently occupying gym space. I am a 250+ pound man, and this thing is solid and sturdy.
